A note from Henry

Dear friends,

After teaching thousands of students, and going through my own long and winding meditation journey, I’m more convinced than ever that meditation has the power to be the single most transformative habit of our lives.

It can really change us, in a way that arguably no other human intervention can. Not only can it bring emotional healing and regulate our nervous systems, it can shift our perspective from being a single, beleaguered entity trying to make its way through an uncertain world, to being part of a greater whole that encompasses all life, and gives us an unshakable belonging.

It can do this not just by helping us tend and heal, but by revealing that the self we thought we were was only a small part of a much larger picture. The separateness of self we take for granted is in fact an illusion. And when we see through it, everything changes.

Pro-social attitudes and emotions well up spontaneously – compassion, sympathy, joy in the wellbeing of others. Energy, commitment, a renewed sense of purpose, and a love for this life, in spite of all its trials and challenges – these emerge in increasing force as we continue the path.

I extend a warm invitation to join me and a community of fellow students on this essential journey in 2025.

With love and thanks,

Henry Shukman signature

Unlocking Meditation

A 4-week series on the crucial foundations of a meditation practice

Sundays, January 19, 26, February 2, 9
10am – 12pm MT

The essential foundations of a meditation practice

Struggling to make meditation a lasting habit? This course dives into the essential building blocks of a meditation practice and equips you with powerful tools to stay consistent.

You’ll explore the core challenges meditators face at all levels – like doubt, performance pressure, anxiety, and unresolved trauma – and learn practical techniques to overcome them.

Key skills include:

  • Noting & labelling thoughts and emotions
  • Connecting emotions to physical sensations
  • Creating a space of acceptance and ease

Focused attention and open awareness

Second, we’ll explore two primary kinds of practice: focused attention vs open awareness.

  • Focused attention: Sharpen mindfulness by focusing on specific aspects of your experience – such as sensations, thoughts, or emotions. This practice helps you stay present, react less, and cultivate a peaceful, spacious awareness.
  • Open awareness: Embrace the entirety of your experience without judgment or the need to change it. This unconditional approach deepens your ability to remain calm and accepting, building on the foundation of focused attention.

Framing the whole path of meditation

In addition to these specific tools and approaches, we will also explore a framing for the whole path of meditation. To stay motivated, it’s vital to understand the full spectrum of meditation’s transformative benefits. This course introduces four key zones of practice, showing how meditation can:

  • Provide lasting therapeutic and healing effects
  • Support psychological self-discovery
  • Unlock beautiful flow states
  • Deepen your sense of connection with the world and others
  • Challenge assumptions about the self
  • Offer glimpses of boundless awareness and awakening

Discover how meditation can be a lifelong journey of growth, insight, and profound connection.

The Guest House

Defusing and disempowering difficult thoughts and emotions

Sundays, June 1, 8, 22, 29
10am – 12pm MT

There is no lotus flower without mud

Thich Nhat Hanh taught, “No mud, no lotus.” This course invites you to see life’s challenges—difficult thoughts, emotions, and inner struggles—not as obstacles, but as essential ingredients for growth. Just as mud nourishes the lotus, your inner challenges can become the very source of joy, peace, and loving-kindness.

Many people believe meditation should always feel calm and pleasant—but true transformation comes from embracing discomfort. This course shows you how to cultivate patience, compassion, and wisdom toward your “wayward heart” as it moves through different emotional states. Over time, you’ll learn to meet inner challenges with kindness, clarity, and steadiness.

Putting out the welcome mat for our challenges

What if, instead of fighting difficult emotions, you welcomed them? This course teaches you to “put out the welcome mat” for life’s challenges—building a resilient, non-reactive awareness that can hold space for discomfort without being overwhelmed by it. Paradoxically, these very challenges can become doorways to deep flow states, non-dual awareness, and profound inner peace.

Through a range of meditative tools and techniques, you’ll learn to:

  • Scan the body for emotional sensations
  • Break down emotions into their core components
  • Disentangle thoughts from feelings for greater clarity
  • Loosen resistance and soften your response to difficult emotions
  • Allow and welcome emotions instead of suppressing them
  • Access a spacious awareness that can hold emotions with compassion
  • Notice the absence of negative emotions
  • Investigate the “self” that feels like the thinker or experiencer of emotions
  • Disengage the sense of self from emotions, leading to greater freedom

Rather than running from discomfort, learn how to face it—and watch as it transforms into a pathway to peace, wisdom, and awakening. This course borrows its name from a poem by Rumi:

The guest house

This being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival.

A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes
as an unexpected visitor.

Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they’re a crowd of sorrows,
who violently sweep your house
empty of its furniture,
still, treat each guest honorably.

He may be clearing you out
for some new delight.

The dark thought, the shame, the malice,
meet them at the door laughing,
and invite them in.

Be grateful for whoever comes,
because each has been sent
as a guide from beyond.

— Rumi (trans. Coleman Barks)

Self and No Self

Understanding and glimpsing nonduality

Sundays September 7, 14, 21, October 5
10am – 12pm MT

The nature of consciousness, self, and non-dual experience

What if the “self” isn’t something to get rid of, but something to welcome with compassion? In this course, we’ll explore profound questions about the nature of consciousness, self, and non-dual experience. Rather than trying to “erase” the self, you’ll learn to see it as another element of experience—an approach that paradoxically makes it easier to see through.

We’ll dive into teachings from early Buddhism, Mahayana, and Zen, each offering unique perspectives on non-duality. From concepts of “emptiness” to “world as mind” and “consciousness as fundamental,” this course offers both a philosophical foundation and a practical path. You’ll gain clarity on key concepts and deepen your understanding of the boundless nature of experience.

Practices to trigger glimpses of the non-dual nature of reality

Direct experience is the most powerful teacher. This course offers practices designed to trigger glimpses of nondual reality—moments of clarity where the line between “self” and “experience” dissolves.

We’ll explore exercises that illuminate the following:

  • sense of self as agent
  • self as recipient of experience
  • the apparent division between self and experience
  • glimpses of selfless experience
  • glimpses of unitary experience
  • consciousness as context of all experience

We’ll also work with Zen koans and the concept of the “Gateless Gate”—a profound paradox that points to both a shift in experience and the realization that nothing was ever missing. By the end of the course, the mysterious teachings of Zen may feel less perplexing and more like signposts to a more expansive, peaceful awareness.

This course is an invitation to go beyond concepts and ideas. Through study, inquiry, and direct experience, you’ll catch glimpses of a more boundless way of being.
